Luke Brown

Luke  began playing brass instruments at the age of 10 with teacher Neil Sawyer. He is a unique musician in that he is comfortable performing on practically all of the instruments in the brass family. On cornet and trumpet he has achieved grade 8 certificates and has been solo cornet with the Band of the Island of Jersey, principal cornet and trumpet with the Jersey Youth Wind Band, co-principal trumpet with the Channel Island Youth Orchestra, pit trumpet player in the Jersey Opera House and a regular trumpeter with the Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Most recently and for the past three competitions, Luke has held the principal cornet seat with Jersey Premier Brass. He is extremely proud to have a 100% winning record in this special seat and presently holds the title of ‘Best Instrumentalist’ winning the third section at the 2005 National Finals.

He has also held the principal euphonium position this band and won the Jersey Eisteddfod Senior Instrumentalist of the Year title.

Luke is arguably most comfortable on the tenor horn. He has held the solo seat with both local brass bands and solo accolades include competition wins in Jersey and Guernsey including the coveted title of ‘Jersey Young Musician of the Year’.

He is capable of playing in almost every genre but particularly enjoys jazz, blues and contemporary music as supported by his time with The Well Swung Jazz Orchestra, Bananafish blues band, Wavelength and Acappella Brass.

Luke particularly enjoys his role as director of local quintet Acappella Brass and having been a past musical director of Jersey Premier Brass and The Well Swung Jazz Orchestra, feels a return to conducting could be a future challenge.
